The purpose of this neighborhood civic association (BBHCA) is to provide a forum and voice for the Community, and to protect and promote the mutual interests and welfare of the Residents of Brookland, Bush Hill, and Gunnell Estates. We are located within Franconia District in Alexandria, Virginia 22310.
BBHCA represents 800+ homes and communicates with residents via this website, Facebook, a print newsletter, email, and community meetings. Members pay annual dues and have a vote in community issues and any actions taken by BBHCA.
BBHCA is your voice with elected and appointed officials and government agencies—state delegates and senators, Lee District Supervisor, Virginia Department of Transportation, Fairfax County Police, School Board, etc. We’re a community that cares and takes action!
BBHCA is run by community volunteers and supported through dues and donations.
Our Mission
The purpose of this Association is to provide a forum and voice for the Community, and to protect and promote the mutual interests and welfare of the residents of Brookland, Bush Hill, and Gunnell Estates.
What Do We Do for You?
BBHCA has a long record of successes in our interaction with local and state government officials, local private businesses, and other organizations. BBHCA members sit on County Boards (Land Use and Transportation) and influence policy for the improvement of Franconia District and Fairfax County.
Past issues have included traffic calming, cell phone tower placement, development in adjacent neighborhoods (e.g., Oakwood Street), local crime, and zoning.
Our History
In the late 70s, the Civic Association of Brookland Estates joined forces with Bush Hill Woods to form the Brookland-Bush Hill Civic Association (BBHCA). In the early 2000s, the membership agreed to include Gunnell Estates in the distribution of the newsletter along with the townhouses off Brookland Road behind McDonald’s. BBHCA currently services 800+ households. See Service Area.
In the past we have worked with community members and the County by evaluating problems and recommending solutions. We’re a community that cares and takes action! However, to do so, we need your continued support. Become a member—make sure our County representatives count us in when they make decisions. Join today!
BBHCA also sponsors community activities, such as our annual Yard Sale in June, National Night Out in August, and Candidates’ Nights for local candidates on election years.

Volunteers Always Needed!
BBHCA is run by a community of volunteers, your neighbors.
So, what can you do?! Share your time and talents with your neighbors for a common cause. And it means that time doesn’t rest on just one or two or three people. But it does take an honest commitment. If you can find 4 to 6 hours a month to volunteer, you are encouraged to participate. And sharing roles/responsibilities is a great opportunity as well.
What do we need? A little bit of everything. Curious? Send an email to the role you may be interested in. Or if you have a particular talent or interest, just let us know and we can fit you in the puzzle. Many pieces make a whole! (And it looks great on your resume.)
